M is for MOVIES

How many of you watched the Oscars this year?  How many of the movies that were nominated had you seen?  I hadn't seen a lot of them at the time of the Oscars, but I'm glad Argo won for Best Picture. I'm personally not a fan of Quentin Tarantino so didn't care about his win for Best Original Screenplay or Christopher Waltz for Best Supporting Actor in Django Unchained. I'm also not a fan of musicals, so gave Les Miserables a pass.  I'd already read the book at university and had seen the version with Liam Neeson years ago.  Recently, I read the book Silver Linings Playbook and could not imagine how they'd make that into a movie, so also gave that one a pass.

However, I read Life of Pi when it was first published and loved the book. So when I decided to see the movie, I was unsure how I'd feel about its treatment.  I think it was well done and the cinematography was marvelous!  This is one movie that actually works well in 3D. I'm glad Ang Lee won for Best Director and Mychael Danna for Best Original Score. I also saw Searching for Sugarman, which won for Best Documentary and highly recommend it. The Best Animated Short, Paperman by John Kahrs was great, and I think you can see it online now.

I do enjoy the movies and now that I have a large screen television set, I'm able to watch them in peace and relaxation at home.  We have seen Skyfall (amazing song by Adele, by the way) and Flight at home and are planning to watch Zero Dark Thirty soon. There are some, however, that one absolutely must see on the huge movie theater screens - Life of Pi for one!

What was your favourite movie of the past year?  What was your favourite moment at the Oscars?  Mine was when Jennifer Lawrence fell as she was mounting the stage to get her award - she was very mature about it and went on to give a most momentous speech in thanks.  Now on to your M posts!

  1. Good introduction for. M, Leslie! I would like to see Life of Pi. I wander how the boy could handle this situation being in a boat with a tiger.

  2. I agree that Life of Pi is a stunner. My favorite movie of the year is one that got barely a nod from criitics: The Last Quartet (NOT the Quartet!). It's a wonderful flick---go see it!

  3. I saw 6 of 9 - all but ZD30, Django and the one with the 6 y.o. girl. Argo was by Best Pic pick, and Ang Lee was deserving as director for Life of Pi. Here's my Oscar pick post.

  6. I watched part of the oscars with my daughter who was home on business but since I had to get up at 5:00 am the next morning to take her to the airport we both went to bed early so missed the end. I hadn't watched many of the movies yet since I see most of them when they come out on netflix but I'm watching most of them now as they come up in my queue.

  11. Add me to the "I LOVED that movie" list! I read the book too, but thought the cinematography was absolutely briliant!

  12. My most favorite movie was (sorry Leslie) Les Miserables. I LOVE the music, think the theme is magnificent and read the full length version of the book a few years ago. I also loved -- for plain silliness and a good laugh, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. My husband has been to India several times and he loved it too. Good fun!

  13. Is there a rule against adding a second entry? Because so far, it seems that we're missing an obvious M for this week. And so, as my "tribute" to Margaret Thatcher, I present a true story of my brush with someone else's Brush with Greatness.

  14. Am not a movie buff... just maybe because I live an hour from Hollywood, lol! Also, because I know a few producers. You're bound to run into them one time of another if you live here, because they are people who go to the grocery store, to the restaurant, etc., just like me.

  15. I seldom go to the movies unless it is really a very good film. And that happens maybe 3 times per year. I don't even remember what I have seen last time. I guess it was the Indian Hotel or something like that. Of "Les Misérables" I have enough living in Waterloo where Victor Hugo has written this book, the city celebrated the 150 anniversary of the book and that was enough miserables for me ! There were the movie (the old French version) expositions, Book readings, celebrations etc etc !

  16. In the UK it would have to be F for "film" or P for "the pictures", although the Americanism "movie" is creeping in here...

  17. Interesting, Chrissy. I didn't think about "movie" being a dialectical variant. Do you say "mulch" in the UK?

  18. Very interesting Leslie!
I am from Pakistan and I have loved Argo and Flight a lot!

  19. I'm not a big movie fan and typically don't watch until they come out on DVD or show up on Netflix. However, I do occasionally like to go out with my husband and see a show.

  20. You are certainly up to date on your movies! I enjoy them once they make it to DVD.

    Happy Wednesday!!

  21. I have yet to watch Life of Pi. I've heard wonderful reviews, and I appreciate yours! I absolutely loved Les Miserables. We'd seen the play a couple of times, but the movie was soooo different. Yes, it's a musical. But certainly not the typical musical. At any rate, it's a good thing there is a diverse offering for the diverse range of interests! :-)

  23. We haven't gone to any movies since we've been living at our cabin...but I did fall in love with the PBS show Downton Abbey. I couldn't watch the Oscars (would have if I could have), but we only receive PBS and sometimes FOX TV stations...most of the time, if we aren't working around the place, we're reading:)

  24. Although I didn't post about a movie, I posted about my favorite authority on bit-part actors from the 30s and 40s, my mom, Charlotte Barlow. AFA movies go: Silver Linings Playbook is one of the most sensitive, hilarious, heart-wrenching, uplifting movies with a mental illness subplot I have EVER seen. I urge everyone who doesn't have mental illness (and I do) to see this. It's an eye opener, and Jennifer Lawrence deserved every molecule of that Oscar. And guess what? Bradley Cooper can ACT.

Incidentally, I'm using Mom's pic as my Gravatar this week. Love to all, Amy

  25. Its been a good long many moons since I been to a movie theater I am so spoiled at watching home movies at home where I can just kick back in my PJ's and not have to look my best while enjoying a nice movie.
