The R in the Month

Photos from Wikipedia

There 's a good girl!!

Oh,come on!!

You're a big boy now...

When I think of the letter R,  I immediately  see before my mind's eye  a bottle of cod-liver oil!
Huh??
Yes, cod-liver oil!!

My mum used to say:" the R is in the month, which means, that you children, will get a spoonful of cod-liver oil every night before going to bed!". And so we had to swallow that nasty tasting stuff from September till May. My mum said it was healthy and protected us against all kind of diseases.
When my children were still very young, my doctor advised me to give them a similar medicine, which tasted a lot better because of the orange juice in it. And again as soon as the R was taking place in the winter months, I gave the children a spoonful of the stuff  and they didn't like it either. When April was over and May had begun, I stopped giving them this medicine!

If you take part in this game, please use the letter R in a photo, or in a poem, a story...whatever, and refer to the founder of this meme:Mrs. Denise Nesbitt and Roger who took over from her.Or show the logo of this meme in your post, or (like I do) in the sidebar.

I hope to see you all!

  1. OMG Will...I remember having to take that cr*p when I was a kid and it made me GAG! I always offered to take the trash out to the garbage bin in the backyard after taking it so I could spit it out in the garden! Oh gross...I would never force my kids to take that stuff. I'm so glad there are better vitamin supplements now!

  6. such a familiar ritual! I was telling my youngest about my mom's giving me cod liver oil in a glass with orange juice. Of course, they didn't mix, but at least I had the juice's flavor to offset the oil. Right away, he googles cod liver oil on his smart phone. Mom was right in giving it to my brother and me. So I bought cod liver oil capsules and I'm taking them 3x daily.

  8. I gave both my sons the cold liver oil with the orange flavour in it but the younger son prefer the one without the flavoring, and keep asking for more! weird child that boy.

  9. Love the RETRO photographs and REMINDER of cod liver oil, I was subjected to it too! Luckily, it's no longer part of my daily RECOMMENDED allowance of nutrients:)

  13. Yes, I think I suffered with that as a child- was it really made from cods' livers? No wonder I became a vegetarian!

  14. It is funny that everywhere in the world parents were giving cod liver oil to their children.
    Thanks everybody for your comments!

  15. I think I was a weird child, my mother used to hide the cod liver oil because I like to drink it. I must say my taste buds are now 'normal' and only ever take the capsules.

  16. That's a new one for me!! Never heard of the "R" in the month. I guess that's what we call holistic now.

  17. Kind of like us old folks now taking our "fish oil" capsules. Can never escape it, but at least we don't have to taste it!

    Happy Wednesday!

  18. Ann, R in the months means that all 8 months containing the letter R, need extra vitamins. The 4 months without the letter R (May, June, July, August) are healthy enough and don't need cod-liver oil.
    But what is "holistic"?

  19. I've never known of the R rule! I'm glad, because I have no desire to ingest cod liver oil or any other of those old timer remedies that are supposed to be good for you...give me bran, LOL!
