Heartbeat, Heartbreak and Happiness.

A beating heart coloured in by granddaughter Olivia when she was just three.
When I was about nine years of age there was a great American Pop Singer called Buddy Holly, to say my friend Beryl and I were crazy about him, was an understatement, we just adored him. Beryl was an only child and was rather spoiled by doting parents, she had a record player well before any one else did,  Each week her doting daddy would buy her a record from the Top 20, I was so lucky she chose me to be her best friend as I got to sit in her bedroom and play all the latest hits  with her, which of course, included every Buddy Holly hit.
Buddy Holly taken in the fifties.

He made several hits but one of my favourites was  called  Heartbeat.

John Lennon was a great fan of his and this is reflected in some of his writing, he recorded, with The Beatles, on one of their early albums, 'Words of Love' written and recorded originally by Buddy Holly, again in the fifties.

John Lennon often wore Buddy Holly style glasses but when it was suggested to him that he was copying his hero just a wee bit too much he stopped wearing them. This was rather unfortunate as John was short sighted so he was forever tripping over wires and speakers on stage. As John was such a clown people just thought it was all part of the act. Paul was a great fan too and this was reflected in their early works.

John wearing his 'Buddy' glasses.

Sadly, in 1959, Buddy Holly was on Tour  in America when he was involved in a plane crash and  lost his life, along with two other pop stars, The Big Bopper and Ricky Valance.

A sad day for the Pop World.

Buddy Holly's adoring fans, worldwide were  Heartbroken. Paul McCartney was a great fan too an he and John featured 'Words of Love', (written and recorded by Buddy),  on one of their L.P's.

  HAPPINESS.

On the 19th of this month I celebrated my 70th birthday and it was such a Happy time for all the family. Our three lovely daughters arranged it at Ingrid's (second daughter's) home.
Ian holding the cake me next to him then  Brother in law Mal and his wife Jean,
then at the back son in law Dean with daughter Kirsten,
, then on the front left is Astrid  and on the front right is
Ingrid.   Standing just behind me is young Ian, Astrid's husband and
at the very front are Molly and Olivia, our granddaughters. Our two
grandsons Freddie and Christian scampered off just as the pictures
were being taken.

I have informed the family that now I have reached the grand old age of 70, I am going to behave outrageously, starting wit,h performing 'wheelies' in my motorised wheelchair down at the local shops !

WAY HEY...... look out here comes Grandma ....

My sincere thanks to our  HIGHLY ESTEEMED Administrator ROGER who toils away keeping ABCW in good order, Also, not forgetting  the  HEARTWARMING  DENISE who founded ABCW many moons ago!
And not forgetting the HEARTY band of HELPERS who assist with visit and commenting on other ABCW ers each week.

I must also thank all those who have helped me overcome the grief I feel  during the loss of my dear sister Norma.  It has been a great source of comfort having the prayers and kind thoughts of so many of my ABCW friends.....Thank you...Di.xx

    1. That's right Roger and I believe, after a film was released about
Buddy Holly's life Paul and his company protested about the inaccuracies in it.
Furthermore, with the help of Buddy Holly's wife, they went on to make another
film about him to set the records right.
      Best wishes,

    1. Hello Anne, I have some old singles of Buddy's but unfortunately do not have anything to
play them on, maybe i shall treat myself to a DVD of his greatest hits or pick some up on my i player.
Each time my youngest daughter drops by she gives me yet another lesson in technology.

  9. Way hey...you GO Grandma! Wonderful post about Buddy Holly - I remember hearing the reporting on the radio about his plane going down. It was so tragic to the entire music community and fans alike! Happy 70th birthday - I'm not far behind!

    1. Hi there Leslie... there was a song in the sixies with the lyrics 'Go Granny, Go Granny, Go Granny, Go,Go,Go... may have been The Beach Boys, another favourite group from my teens, what fun we had then! I too first heard the sad news of Buddy's death on the radio, I was shocked, along with millions of other adoring fans, he was far too young to lose his life.
      love Di xx

    4. That's the one Roger. well done, I knew you would pick up on that!
I had every LP made by the Beach Boys, which my ex took when we
parted in 1982. I got the kids, dog and cat and he got the record
collection, also including all The Beatles EP's, singles and LP's.
I did buy CD's of The Beatles stuff that I liked, some of their
stuff I didn't care much for, I think they went of the rails a bit so
it wasn't such a bad thing for them to part. Although I always hoped
they may get together again at a later date, but sadly,
      that wasn't meant to be.
      Cheers,
      Di..xx

  10. Happy belated birthday! I've noticed that After 60 people start freaking out about your age:) Do whatever you like to do since you are still here! Buddy Holly was not that much known in Europe (that's where I lived as a teen), but the Beatles were extremely popular.

    1. Hi Jeannette,
Thank you for your birthday wishes. Age is nothing but a number after all!
It's a pity Buddy Holly wasn't so well known in Europe, maybe, had he lived longer, his fame may have spread through Europe. I know that The Beatles were popular in Europe as they more or less rose to fame after playing in clubs in Hamburg.
Once they had a number one hit in the UK they were invited to appear on 'The Ed Sullivan Show' in America....The world was their Oyster and Buddy Holly, amongst others, was their inspiration.
      Best wishes,
      Di..

  11. I believe Buddy Holly is one of our most talented Texan musicians. Blessings!

    1. Hello Arnoldo,
I didn't know that Buddy was Texan. He had a great talent, when you think of the short time he was performing, on stage and making records, his talent was enormous. He wrote such melodious stuff, some of it with such beautiful close harmony, such as 'Words of Love, as I mentioned the Beatles covered that to great applause, truly beautiful stirring harmony.
      Best wishes.
      Di. xx
