U is for Unity

I was watching the news, and a reporter pointed out the wisdom of the late Fred Rogers. He was the host of the long-running program on the Public Broadcasting System in the United States called Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood. The reporter was thinking of the sad events in Manchester, England, but it could also applicable to other tragedies, personal or collective.

Mr. Rogers said:

"When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'"

From Vox:

"Though Rogers was deeply religious, he never attempted to argue that tragedy was part of God's plan for the world or anything similar. Instead, he aimed to keep our eyes turned toward the good things humanity is capable of, which are often in much greater evidence than the bad."

In the midst of the bad, we need to stick together for the good.

Hello and good morning, -afternoon, -evening, dear people who all participate is this wonderful photomeme, which is a joy to me, week after week, after week. I’m always curious to what you come up with!

The challenging letter of this week is the U and I've chosen the word:  UFO 

Somewhere in my childhood.... about my 8th year or so, my father bought a new television, from that day on, much if not everything (i don't remember, to be honest) one could watch what was on, in colour, wow what a wonder... a large box on a tv-cabinet which showed us wonderful things.

I was not often allowed to watch but my father was a fan of Star Trek, a became that too. (yes i do have a lot inherited from him, not my appearances but in character so much more, but that is not the point here).

Lately the 'old' series have been repeated.
So many years later, approx. 45 years, many things of what they were able in those series, which at that point were beyond anything thought possible, are now 'common'... think of the mobile phones, the internet, travelling to the moon etc.

If asked... 'do you believe in ufo's?' My answer is "yes certainly".
The universe is unmeasurable, so why should we think that we are all alone in it? Our planet, a very small one compared to lots of others... why shouldn't there be a lifeform as well?

I still like scifi-series, not all of them ofcourse, but besides Star Trek (in all its forms), X-files is a very great favorite.
If it is called scifi justly, i don't really know but i also like The Librarians, Warehouse 13, Sanctuary, Haven, Stargate, Dr. Who, and lots more.

Maybe also due to my unmeasurable curiosity i often wish to be able to take a look in those parts of the uiverse.

Unique

Mrs. Nesbitts' ABC-Wednesday Round ~ 17 U    

Hello and good morning, -afternoon, -evening, dear people who participate is this wonderful photomeme, which is a joy to me, week after week, after week. I am always curious to what everyone of you comes up with!

This week's challenging letter is U and the word i've chosen is UNIQUE

We, people, are all alike and at the same time, nobody equals every other person. That is unique all by itself. Of course... we will meet, throughout our entire life, people who we don't like from the first second. Sometimes that changes and sometimes it doesn't. The uniqueness of every person makes that one 'deserves' a closer look. Can that other one become someone who we will (learn to) love and cherish or avoid in the future? The unique factor is that we will never know what will happen between you and that other person, it will always has a surprising element in it. A nice one ore a lesser nice one.

I think that I am not the only one who has 'been forced' to conclude that the first impression was wrong at sometimes, in both ways. One who seemed a very nice person turned out to be not and the other way around too. I even think that I am not the only person who had to let go someone which I loved because of whatever reason which caused that person and me to get 'strangers'. There are people who say that love and hate lie close to each other. And yes, they might be right but Love is a wonderful feeling where hate is not even though both feelings are genuine and have the right to exist. Personally I've learned that hate will hurt just one person, myself... the lesson I've learned from that is that I don't want to live my life and waste time with hating people.

It took some time, of course, to make it, how do I put it..., to learn to let go the negativeness about someone who I once loved, maybe still do, but don't want to let be part of my life in the future. One can love another person but not like him?! So... unique is my word of choice for this week's challenging letter. Like you and anybody else, I am a unique person and I think we all should be proud about what we have accomplished so far no matter how bad and hard some times were and, (hopefully not!) will be in the future to come. Every moment is a unique one, wich we should try to make the best off! We will never get the chance to do it over again. Wishing you the awareness of the uniqueness of every moment and the ability to enjoy and cherish it to the fullest!

U stands for UP

'Up the airy mountain and down the rushing glen, we daren't go a hunting for fear of little men, wee folk, good folk, trooping altogether, green jacket, red cap and white owl's feather'.   (William Allingham 1824-1889).

When I was in my teens we used to go to our church summer school. We would board a coach outside of the church and travel Up to the Lake District, a wonderful National Park of mountains, lakes and pretty villages etc.

 

Mount Skiddaw,  overlooking Lake Derwentwater.  Skiddaw is 3,054 ft above sea level and is the 4th highest mountain in the UK. 

 

Up on top of the World, or so it seemed to a 14 year old. We actually reached the peak and kissed the stone! This view from the summit looks down over Lake Bassenthwaite, the plateau at the peak is called Striding Edge. Whilst we were climbing and scrabbling Up the mountain we would sing many songs and of course, 'Up the Airy Mountain'.

Below the stunning Ashness Bridge, formerly a pack horse bridge, with Lake Derwentwater and Mount Skiddaw in the background .

Up The Airy Mountain and Down the Rushy Glen (yet again) and you will come across the most picturesque spectacle of  Tarn Hows ( above) a tarn is a small lake set high amongst a mountain range.

I shall have to UP and away now as we are setting off on a trip to the beautiful Isle  of Anglesey in North Wales,  for a week's holiday. It is just about a 90 minute drive  from our home UP and along the N.Wales coastal road.

My sincere thanks to the UTTERLY lovely Denise for giving US so much pleasure in devising ABCW and also to the UBIQUITOUS Roger for his superb administration of ABCW.

U is for Untied, and United

Ever notice that UNTIED and UNITED have the same letters, but their meanings are pretty much the opposite?

UNTIED is like my shoelaces, too often, ready for someone to step on them and cause me to fall.
UNITED suggests things working together, for a common goal.

UNTIED means, literally, at loose ends.
UNITED is strong; you might be able to break one stick, but bundled together, they are nearly UNBREAKABLE.

UNTIED suggests a rootlessness.
UNITED suggests connection.

And UNITED is what this team of participants and visitors have become, lo these seven years. This is an exercise where doing it alone is UNSUSTAINABLE, but working together creates mutual UNDERSTANDING, which is what we need more of in this UNIVERSE.

U is for UNDERSTANDING

As we get near the end of Round 13, I'm regularly struck by how Denise Nesbitt's UNDERSTATEDLY modest experiment, ABC Wednesday, has achieved a goal beyond its UNDOUBTEDLY simple intention in the beginning.

It has reached across the world with a sense of UNITY. We can each take a UNIQUE take on a given letter, yet the post touch on some UNIVERSAL themes. This is far too UNUSUAL in this world: note how the words UNITED and UNTIED share the same letters, and while some seek to UNIFY, others find more pleasure in taking UMBRAGE, UNDERMINING the effort.

(When I type in UNDERSERVED in my computer, it suggests UNDESERVED.)

Still I feel UPBEAT about the UNDERSTANDING that has been UNLEASHED in this little corner of the UNIVERSE the last six and a half years.

Unidentified Flying Letters

UNBELIEVABLY we have reached the letter U in our adventure through the alphabet, our ULTIMATE destination UNDERWAY with UNBOUNDED and UNFETTERED enthusiasm.  This is the UMPTEENTH round so what will you UNEARTH this week?  Will it be the UNEXPECTED, or stories UNFOLDING, UNFORGETTABLE memories, and UNIQUE perspectives.  Put those UNIDENTIFIED flying letters into a word, or maybe more,  starting with the letter U.

What about UNIDENTIFIED FLYING OBJECTS or UFOs?  There were mysterious flying airships sighted in the 1880s but it took until the 1950s before the flying saucers were reported and when the term UFOLOGY was coined.  The UK National Archives have helpfully released this chart from 1969 of data collected in 1967 and 68 so you can spot your local UFO as it flies past the window:-

It is UNDOUBTEDLY the day of the week when it is time to UNITE UNDER the ABC Wednesday UMBRELLA for the UMPTEENTH time.

It is UNIVERSALLY ACKNOWLEDGED that it will be UTTERLY UNPREDICTABLE AND UNBOUNDED imagination will rule to UNVEIL a connection to the letter U.  Will we find UNICORNS or UTOPIA or see the playing of UKULELES or UILLEAN pipes?   That is UNDOUBTEDLY the joy one can never guess what you will display and what we will find.   So take a sip of USQUEBAUGH or UISGEBEATHA or even  UISCE beatha, all different spellings of the same thing, (the water of life = whiskey) alternatively sip your tipple of choice when you are ready post your link, sign up, sit back and browse the UNENDING variety and join in the UNIVERSAL conversation.
