G is for GORGEOUS!

Feast your eyes people of the GLOBE!

Yes tis the coffee morning season here in our little village tucked away in the North of Yorkshire, here in the UK, close to the sea and on the moors.

Mrs Nesbitt is rolling up her sleeves and getting very busy....here are some of my specialities...

Strawberry......

Scotch eggs....

Corned beef pies....

More corned beef pies.....
(Never enough corned beef pies)

Chocolate fancies....

Coffee walnut!

Last year we made over £2,000 for our village hall funds and rumour has it our efforts have been recognised and submitted for an award!

Will keep you posted, but right now the kitchen is calling!

G is for gross

For some reason, I love words that have multiple meanings, those words that are considered true homonyms. So it is for the word GROSS. It is an old word; from the The Free Dictionary: 1350–1400; Middle English < Old French gros large (as n., grosse twelve dozen) < Late Latin grossus thick, coarse.

So GROSS means large, big, or bulky. Or brutishly coarse, as in behavior; crude. Or disgusting and offensive.

But it also means exclusive of deductions; the total.

For instance, the gross profits of a business are those profits before various deductions, such as labor and cost of good sold. Your cereal box or can of soup gives you the net weight of the food; the gross weight would include all the packaging.

Of course, as alluded to in the in the definition, it also means, specifically, twelve dozen, or 144.

We have often had more than half that total many times this GO round. I'm so GLAD we've had a GROSSLY (i.e., large) successful start with ABC Wednesday.

However, in a bit of irony, our GROUP of visitors are GROSSLY overextended in terms of the number of GUESTS they can visit. It would be GREAT if some of you could GRACIOUSLY agree to visit other folks and/or write these GOOFY intros.

Contact me at my email: ROGEROGREEN (at) GMAIL (dot) COM

Oh, here's a GOODY I may not have mentioned: if you GOOF up when you post to the Linky thing, leaving some GLARING problem sch as a link that does not work, it's supposedly allows you to delete and start over. But if that does NOT work, you can write to the same e-mail, tell me what the URL is supposed to be, and I will see if I can fix it.

G is for Green

Unsurprisingly, one of my favorite colors is GREEN. But WHICH green am I talking about? There are many shades of green. All of them! (OK, MOST of them.)

I like that being GREEN means being environmentally aware. I'm forever finding bottles to recycle, if not return. There is even a GREEN Party in New York State, and other parts of the world.

GREEN means GO, a great affirmation.

Of course, GREEN has some negative connotations as well.

It conveys the idea of something, or someone, not mature, deficient in training or sophistication or experience.

Worse, it suggests one of the seven deadly sins, as in green with envy, the green-eyed monster.

Still, lots of great songs that start with GREEN (all linked; chart numbers from Billboard (US) Top 100).

Green, Green - New Christy Minstrels (#14 in 1963)

Green, Green Grass of Home - Tom Jones (#11 in 1967)

Green Onions - Booker T and the MGs (#3 in 1962)

Green River - Creedence Clearwater Revival (#2 in 1969)

Green Tambourine - the Lemon Pipers (#1 in 1968)

GOOGLE + what for ?

I take the opportunity to ask you what are the advantages of Google+ other then a loss of time for Bloggers ? For chatting there is Facebook.

More and more Bloggers fall in the trap and subscribe to Google+ otherwise they are not allowed to comment on a Blog !

How often it happens to me that I get a comment with a link to the Blog. When I click on the link a Google+ page appears. Now I have to do FBI investigations to find the blog link on the Google+ page and most of the time there is none ! No way to comment on the Blog without becoming member of the "Circle" I don't want to be member of a circle, I just want to comment.

I try to find an email address, just to inform the person that I am unable to comment, but to 90 % there is no email address either. I hate to be forced into something I don't like and my opinion is that Google behaves more and more like a Dictator ! Where is the freedom of choice ? So what do I do after having tried for a while to find the corresponding link to the Blog ? I give up and don't comment !

Where are the good old times when you got a comment, and you could reply so easily ? It gets more and more complicated but I am proud to say, so far I could avoid to fall into the Google+ trap.

Letter G : to google

A new verb moved into all languages : to google ! When Prince Philip of the UK asks something, his royal wife answers : Google !! I heard this in an interview about the Queen.

So if you have a question about why your dog scratches himself all the time ... google and you will get hundreds of reasons ! You don't find your glasses, just google but don't mix it up with goggles ! A typing fault arrives very quickly. Your husband or partner forgets to put the trash bin outside, google and Google will tell you why ! Everything in life from finding a new partner to how repair a car just google the answer is on your screen ! And to help the other members I just googled

and here is the answer

G is for Go Green

When I was growing up, if someone said they were going green that meant they were sick.

abcwedgreenDSCN5449

The expression green around the gills means someone is ill from motion sickness, the flu, or perhaps from too much alcohol.

I'm not sure when Go Green first became a battle cry for environmental movements.
000000abcwedggDSCN1233

My guess would be that it was sometime in the early 1970s that Go Green started being adopted as a slogan for anything from ocean conservation groups to recycling efforts.

Sometimes go green becomes ironic because it's used by commercial enterprises that aren't particularly good for the environment. They want you to think their products are better for the environment than their competitors products and begin their ad with GO GREEN.

Language and expressions can be confusing but tone of voice helps. If I say I'm going green and sound like I'm about to pass out that probably means I'm green around the gills. If I say I'm going green with a happy tone of voice, you can assume it has to do with an environmental issue I'm trying to help with my genuine efforts.

G like Gattina

When I had to choose a nickname for my blog I thought about the nickname they gave me in art school "Madame Chat" which means Mrs Cat, but "chat" in English means a chatterbox which I am too, but I didn't want this as a nickname. Finally I found a solution I thought about "cat" in Italian and that is Gatto, for a male, Gatta for a female and Gattina for a kitty. Now you know !

Let's GO with the game and a lot of good, grand, and glamorous words !

G is for Gateux!

This week's introduction is over to Gattina - who will be along shortly with a GREAT intro!

I start to believe that I get "gateux" or "gaga" which means in English "doddering - geriatric" because I forgot our precious Wednesday's ABC introduction. I had put it on Wednesday which means Tuesday in some countries and of course Sir Google's galender (German accent) didn't jump into my eyes on the right day. The only thing I ask you : Please don't compare me with Lady Gaga, I am not yet doddy. I prefer to stay a Gattina which means Kitten in Italian.
